Excellent With A Neat Whiskey

Old Toby is the second in the Middle Earth Series from Just for Him. I believe this to be an excellent smoke accompanied by a straight up J.D. Old No. 7, Turkey 101, or Ezra Brooks.

Upon the char light I got the unmistakable flavor of freshly mown wheat. Old Toby definitely has a grassy flavor, but totally unlike prior experience with blends containing Perique. I have never tasted this in a tobacco before. This was totally unexpected and nothing short of Excellent.

I have again chosen my TRG White Ringed Volcano to smoke this in. And, continuing my practice (as with the other blends in the Middle-Earth Pipeweed Series Sampler) I will smoke the sample all the way through without smoking anything else until I have finished the sample. This is so I know what it is really like without any adulteration. This sample, while large enough to decide if one should purchase more, is a bit on the smallish side. I must admit to being somewhat disappointed.

As the smoke continued I detect the unmistakable taste of vanilla, not overpowering but in good balance. Unlike Treebeard from the series this isn't overpowered by my latte, Old Toby’s flavors come through with flying colors. It is smoking very dry and very cool. I am impressed.

Now as I approach the end of the first bowl I get a very smoky flavor, a sweet hickory smoke flavor. Old Toby seems to have an unadulterated smoky flavor that reminds me of the filtering whiskey aroma at the Jack Daniels distillery. (That aroma is one of the best olfactory experiences on the planet, by-the-by.) Old Toby is one truly exquisite pipe tobacco! And, I am forced to award it five out of five stars only because I have no higher personal rating. As I finish the bowl, there is only a fine powdery white ash with very little dark ash under it that remains and it's dry. I have to give a standing ovation to the blender Mr. Bob Schafer. Old Toby is a truly inspired blend.

The cut is listed as "ribbon" and I agree. However, I don't believe that to be the literal truth. And it is supposed to be Virginia. I think it is a Virginia Flake that has been cut across the grain to look like ribbon and I definitely see some burley and taste it too. I think they could have broken up the ribbons of flake a bit better, It did required some rubbing out but not much. I had to break up a few pieces that were a bit too long for the smallish bowl size of my pipe. But, I am not complaining. As for the nicotine content, I would go with medium. Old Toby is a very satisfying smoke. After finishing the other three bowls, I can say it has been excellent.  I have to have more.
