Tin Description: We have wanted to produce our own Virginia-based flake or Krumble Kake, and the result is Marble Kake. A firmly-pressed blend of Bright and Red Virginias, it comes as a solid piece which can be broken or sliced and rubbed-out, and the flavor changes depending upon how you prepare it. One of our knowledgeable Virginia fans has compared it to Hamborger Veermaster as a smooth, but tasty Virginia blend.

Hearth & Home Marble Kake

Blender: Russ Ouellette

Producer: Sutliff

Description: "We have wanted to produce our own Virginia-based flake or Krumble Kake, and the result is Marble Kake. A firmly-pressed blend of Bright and Red Virginias, it comes as a solid piece which can be broken or sliced and rubbed-out, and the flavor changes depending upon how you prepare it. One of our knowledgeable Virginia fans has compared it to Hamborger Veermaster as a smooth, but tasty Virginia blend." Available in 1.5 oz. and 8 oz. tins as well as bulk.

Packaging: This is a 'krumble kake' and my 8 oz. tin didn't come as a solid piece, but 'pre-krumbled', broken into small chunks and shreds. The tobacco was on the dry side, however the blender informed me that it is packaged up on the dry side, which makes sense. For a krumble kake to actually krumble, it would have to be. Dark to medium brown in color.

Tin Note: Earthy and fermented with a deep, natural tobacco aroma.

Room Note: Because I'm forced by SWMBO to smoke in solitary confinement outside in my workshop, the aroma is just fine by me.

Packing: I simply crumble up the chunks and lightly pack it mixed with the shreds leaving a small air pocket in the bottom of the bowl.

Lighting: Because of the dry nature of the krumble kake, it takes a match light readily.

Strength: On the mild side with low nicotine content.

Flavor and Body: This is where Marble Kake really delivers for me as an everyday smoke. The flavor isn't complex, but fuller and deeper without the sharpness and bite of a gold/yellow VA as can sometimes occur.  A touch of the sweet red VAs occasionally comes through and, if properly smoked, has no bite at all. This is a real accomplishment without using a darker, stronger leaf. Marble Kake, as presented in the tin that I bought, can become hot and harsh because of its crumbled and dry nature, so I use a slow, measured VA cadence. With patience, I'm rewarded with a full richness that is unique to this tobacco and maintains an even flavor, burn and finish. I didn't notice any change in flavor profile as noted by the blender's description because the way that it was packaged in the tin.

Last Look: If Hearth & Home Marble Kake is supposed to be a solid piece, my tin appears to be a quality control problem unless the cut and packaging has been changed. Regardless, Marble Kake is a terrific tobacco for smokers wanting a fuller flavored VA without the fuller strength…another H&H home run!
