| Review by The German |
Variety taken too far When I got my first tin of this blend, I was totally blown away. At the time, I had never even dared to dream about such a full Orient-with-some-Latakia affair. Very little sweetness in there, almost no VA, but lots of good, creamy taste as well as a beautiful room note. That first tin contained a flake of mostly Orientals, with a very thin vein of Latakia and a layer of VA. My second tin contained a completely different mixture, being about half VA, half Orientals, and only a trace of Latakia. The third tin then surprised me by being about 1/3rd Latakia, with almost no VA and lots of Orientals. All smoked very well, tasted beautiful, though the room note varied with the content of the tin in question. Now, all of those tins were delicious smokes. When I buy a tin of a certain tobacco, I expect at least a minimum of standardisation, though. Germain's SLF is, in all its permutations, high-quality leaf. But unless they get their act together and start delivering the same blend in every tin, I'm outta here.
