Quiet Nights

Quiet Nights - GLP International

Tinned - 051310

Pipe - Ruthenberg - bent Dublin - group 3 in size

In the tin;

Rectangular flakes. Dark brown with some mid brown and tan flecks.

Aroma - leather, rich, ripe, deep, and "smoky".

Rubs out easily and packs well.

Upon my first sniff of the opened tin I expected this blend to be well beyond my strength limitations. It has a full bodied aroma, which to some would suggest a very full strength blend.  However you would be ( as I was ) mistaken.

There was no knock me on my butt "hit" upon first light.  Yes, a full flavor arrived, yet it was not over the top. It was incredibly smooth, yet very flavorful.   There is lots going on in this blend and to my inept palette, more than I can put into words.  I am unable to pin point ay singular component as far as a flavor similarity.  There is fruitiness, a hint of sweetness in the after taste, a dash of citrus, plus a woodsy smokiness.  This would not be a blend that would be my first bowl of the day, BUT it could well become the blend for my second, third and beyond.  I find this blend to have a very comforting "warmth" about it.  A blend that makes me want to load up and go for a walk on a cool Autumn day.  I also find it very enjoyable for sitting in my office with a cup of fine fresh brewed coffee.

The "room note" is brilliant.  The Latakia component does not come to the forefront at all, as is the case with many blends.  It is on the mild side, which will please others.  A soft warm aroma fills the air.  It reminds me of large leather wing back chairs and relaxing over a chess board.

Ageing considerations?  Only time will tell.  Unlike a number of current blends by various makers, this blend IS ready to enjoy right now, fresh from the tin.   No need to cellar for a few years to enjoy the fruits of pleasure.  That being said, with age it may become even more complex and even richer.

I have tried a number of Greg's blends. Not all have lit my world on fire.  Many have though. This one may be his finest creation yet.  There will be a number of tins of this blend in my cellar for current and future enjoyment.

very quiet nights

I concur with Briarblue's review. It's properly named, not explosive- just a quietly relaxing smoke for the end of the day's meditation. No bite, no bark, no stress..........
I smoked it in a freshly cleaned 1985 Peterson Mark Twain. SWMBO did not complain about room note and when asked admitted that it was "less offensive than your usual stuff"- I favor full strength heavy latakia english blends, so that's a strong positive endorsement from her.

Quiet nights first experience

Peterson xl20 bent billiard

I only discovered GL Pease last month.   I have smoked pipes for 50 years and always had a standing mail order for the same blend.  Last month my pipe shop let me down and didn't have the necessary ingredient.  I did some reading on the tablet and long story short I ordered a new Peterson pipe and some assorted tobaccos.  Two were Pease blends.  Gaslight and Quiet Nights.
Quiet Nights does not have a smell that just jumps out of the tin.  It is subtle.  I rubbed some out and filled my pipe.  I was not sure just what to expect.  When lit it burned nicely and didn't get hot.  The smoke Smelled so good, like a campfire.  It was not at all harsh.  The tobacco burned slowly, stayed lit very well, and I loved it.  My wife did not complain at all about the smell.  I am very impressed with this blend.  It's refreshing to find a tobacconist with his level of knowledge.  I also like the old fashioned cuts and plugs that are coming out now.  Thanks Gary!
